I have type 2 diabetes and I test with the freestyle lite tester. It is not consistent.?
Frequently when I test myself I have 3 totally different numbers. For instance I just checked myself and it read 74. I didnt believe it because thats way low so I retested and it read 125. So I needed the tie breaker test and it came up 145! So three consecutive tests and three different numbers. I just want to know is this happening to others? Do I need a new tester-I just got this one. What would cause my tests to be so different. Any suggestions?
Here are the options that I would suggest:
a. Run a control test to make sure your meter is calibrated properly.
b. In between each test make sure your finger tips are free from any excess glucose, it isn’t necessary to wash your hands thoroughly as many suggest but you should run your fingertips under warm water and rub them together, then dry them with something clean.
c. If your lancet device has to have a new needle for every test make sure it is changed for each one, it’s been proved in studies that using the same needle to test often will cause cross contamination which simply means that there are still microscopic blood cells that remain on the needle, this can give you false readings.
d. Or it could be a fluke….we all get them from time to time.
My solution over the years has been to use two different meters manufactured by two different companies to compare the results in the event I think I might be getting a false reading. I also use the Multi-clix lancet device that holds a drum of six needles, none of which can be seen or touched. Just be sure to move on to the next needle in the drum before re-testing. This lancet device is manufactured by Accu-chek and comes with the Accu-chek Aviva meter but it can be purchased separately.
